About Naturopathic
Medicine
In licensing states, Naturopathic physicians
(N.D's) are general practitioners trained as specialists in natural medicine.
N.D.'s are educated in conventional medical sciences, but are not conventional
medical doctors (M.D.'s).
Naturopathic physicians treat disease and restore
health using clinical nutrition, herbal medicine (phytotherapy/botanical
medicine), homeopathy, physical medicine (including forms of manipulation),
hydrotherapy, counseling and stress management.
Naturopathic physicians obtain their graduate degrees
in Naturopathic medicine from a four year, graduate level college of Naturopathic
medicine.
In graduating from the National College of Naturopathic
Medicine in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Taylor completed over 1500 clinic
and preceptor hours, accumulated over 1,000 patient contacts, and completed
over 2070 hours of Basic and Clinical Sciences, 492 hours of Naturopathic
Therapeutics, 144 hours of Clinical Nutrition, 144 hours of Counseling,
and 474 hours of Conventional Medical Therapeutics. She also did
additional course work in Naturopathic Manipulative Technique (NMT), Homeopathy,
and Spiritual Aspects of Healing.
Dr. Taylor's classroom and clinic experience
includes Minor Surgery, Gynecology (Women's Health), Obstetrics, Cardiology,
Gerontology, Urology, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Radiology, Pediatrics,
Oncology, Public Health, Neurology, Lab Diagnosis, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology,
and Genetics.
In licensing states, N.D.'s must pass either
a state level (Arizona) or national board exam, with their practice regulated
by a State Board. At this time, Illinois and Iowa are not licensing
states.
Therefore, in Iowa and Illinois, N.D.'s are prohibited from diagnosing,
exercising prescription rights, ordering certain laboratory procedures,
and performing minor surgery. Having no licensing law also prohibits
insurance coverage for clients who seek otherwise qualified natural health
care. However, more states are adopting licensing laws as both a
protection against untrained practitioners and a preservation of a patient's
right to chose their preferred medical care. As more individuals
demand qualified integrated health care, the likelihood of licensure increases.
Please write or call your state representative and let them know you
support licensure for Naturopathic medicine.
Naturopathic physicians are the only primary health
care providers clinically trained in a wide variety of natural and conventional
therapeutic systems.

Naturopathic
Physicians practice in accordance with the Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:
-
The Healing Power of Nature: Vis Medicatrix Naturae.

Doctors of Naturopathic
Medicine view the healing process as ordered and intelligent, and believe
that the body has an inherent ability to restore itself to health as well
as defend itself against disease. Illness is seen as a manifestation
of the body's attempt to defend and heal itself. Therefore, the role
of the physician is to identify and remove those agents blocking
the healing process, support the patient's ability heal themselves, and
support and direct the creation of a healthy internal and external environment.
In this process, the physician does not separate the functioning of the
mind, body and spirit of the individual.
Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine
believe that health and disease result from a complex interaction of physical,
mental, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, genetic and other
causes. The balanced, dynamic functioning of all aspects of an individual's
life are important to health. N.D.'s seek to treat the whole person,
taking many factors into consideration.
-
First Do No Harm: Primum No Nocere.
Naturopathic physicians will first
seek to use therapies which are the least invasive and carry the least
opportunity for harmful side effects. At the same time, N.D.'s try
whenever possible to avoid suppression of symptoms, as symptoms are seen
as an expression of the individual's life force and it's attempt to heal
itself. An important part of a naturopathic physician's training
is be able to recognize which cases may be safely treated and which need
to be referred to other health care practitioners.
-
Identify and Treat the Cause: Tolle Causum.
Symptoms are not the cause of
an illness, but rather a sign that the vital or life force of the individual
is out of balance and attempting to defend or correct itself. Often
the cause of an illness is found in diet, lifestyle choices, habits or
stem from mental-emotional or spiritual causes. N.D.'s believe that
treating to suppress symptoms rather than seeking to remove the cause
of the disorder may cause a more chronic or serious illness to develop.
-
Prevention is the Best Cure.
N.D.'s believe that healthy choices
in diet and lifestyle develop and maintain healthy individuals. Naturopathic
physicians are trained to assess various risk factors susceptibility which
may be hereditary or involve errors of diet or lifestyle in order to develop
an appropriate and individualized program for wellness.
-
Doctor as Teacher: Docere.

Teacher was the original meaning
of the word "doctor". N.D.'s believe in teaching their patients/clients
how to be healthy and encouraging individuals in being responsible for
their health. N.D.'s believe that the doctor-patient relationship
which is cooperative and based on mutual respect is therapeutic in and
of itself, and that there are natural laws and principles, which, when
taught and practiced, will maximize health.

Natural Therapies
Used by Naturopathic Physicians Include:
-
Clinical Nutrition: Nutrition and the therapeutic use
of foods have always been a cornerstone of naturopathic medicine.
A growing body of evidence now validates the naturopathic concept of using
foods and nutritional supplements to treat or manage a wide range of conditions.
N.D.'s receive over 140 classroom hours in clinical nutrition.
-
Homeopathy: Over 200 years old, this powerful system
of medicine is widely used and accepted in many other countries.
The British and Dutch Royal families employ physicians specializing in
homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies act to strengthen the innate healing
of the individual, and seldom have side effects. Brought to the US
in 1825 by doctors who had studied in Europe, by 1900 there were 22 colleges
of Homeopathic medicine, including a department at the University of Iowa
in Iowa City. The sale and preparation of Homeopathic remedies has
been regulated by the FDA since 1938. Modern research has shown Homeopathic
remedies to be effective, with research articles printed in the British
Journal of Pharmacology, The Lancet and Pediatrics.
-
Botanical Medicine (Phytotherapy or Herbal Therapy):
Naturopathic physicians receive extensive training in this area and often
blend their own formulas, or even prepare their own extracts. Research
in the German E Commission Monograph has verified the use of plants as
powerful healing substances which are safe and effective when used knowledgeably.
Scientific research in Asia and Europe has shown that some herbal preparations
are at times clinically superior to synthetic drugs.
-
Physical Medicine: Techniques used by N.D.'s include,
but are not limited to, applications of heat and cold, diathermy, ultrasound,
hydrotherapy, exercise therapy, and Naturopathic Manipulative Technique
(NMT).
-
Oriental Medicine: Naturopathic physicians are trained
in the fundamentals of Oriental medicine and methods of diagnosis.
Many incorporate acupuncture, acupressure and oriental botanical medicine
their practice.
-
Counseling and Stress Management: N.D.'s are trained
in a number of psychological techniques, including biofeedback, hypnotherapy,
counseling, nutritional balancing, abreactive therapy and other methods
-
Minor Surgery: All Naturopathic physicians are required
to complete classroom and clinic work in the surgical removal of foreign
bodies, cysts and other superficial masses, and superficial wound repair,
using local anesthesia.

THE EPSOM SALT BATH, ELI G. JONES, MD & "THE PIZZA CURE"
Eli G. Jones, MD (1850 - 1933) practiced for
over 50 years, selecting methods he found truly useful from conventional
medicine, Physio-medicine, Biochemic, Homeopathic and Botanical (Herbal)
medicine. He developed such skill in treating difficult cases, that
he became known as a "doctor's doctor", assisting his fellow physicians
on up to 2,000 cases a year!
Dr. Jones wrote many excellent articles and books.
In Cancer: Its Causes, Symptoms and Treatment (originally published
in 1922), he described specific and different approaches to each type of
cancer then known laying great stress on individualizing the course
of treatment for each patient. However, one treatment he prescribed
for nearly all his cancer patients was a twice weekly Epsom salt bath.
(2)
Dr. Jones' recommendation was simple: dissolve
one pound of Epsom salts in a tub of warm to moderately hot water, and
soak at least 20 minutes. I have done this and found it incredibly
relaxing and rejuvenating, and now use it as a starting point for aromatherapy
baths. One of my favorite combinations to help relieve the symptoms
of a cold or the 'flu is as follows:
In a tub of water as hot as I can safely stand it,
I add one pound of Epsom salts. Just before I get in, I add the following
essential oils:
Five drops each of Basil, Marjoram (or you can use
Thyme) and Rosemary, and three drops of Black Pepper. If I don't
have the essential oils, I use a tablespoon each of the dried herbs and
three peppercorns in cheese cloth, or the toe of an old nylon or sock,
knot the cloth or sock to contain the herbs, and toss it into the tub.
Then I soak myself, sweat and enjoy. When
I feel I'm coming down with the 'flu or a cold, I try to keep the water
quite warm and stay in the tub for thirty minutes to an hour. I've
found this very effective, especially if the symptoms include feeling tired,
achy and chilled.
I gave a jar of this mixture to my sister Beth,
who read the ingredients, and promptly dubbed the mix "The Pizza Cure".
If you have heart or circulatory problems, diabetes
or are pregnant, or have some other condition which may be aggravated by
heat, please consult your health care provider before indulging in the
above.
